It was about 12 years ago, at a ski resort in South Lake Tahoe.

It was Thanksgiving, and my best friend and I had decided to take advantage of the long weekend and get out of Los Angeles to spend the holiday with her family in their vacation cabin.

So there we were, two single girls in our late twenties headed off for a fun filled weekend at the slopes.

Skiing? Oh no. There was none of that involved.

We were there for a much higher purpose – to meet MEN!

So we spent the weekend doing what we did best – we shopped during the day, and went out on the town at night.

I know what it's like to be alone during the holidays.

I remember how excited I would be if I met someone who showed some real relationship potential in the months or even weeks leading up to the holiday season.

Finally! This Christmas I might actually be a part of a relationship - a couple!

I might actually have someone to show up with me for the office holiday party and family Christmas gathering! Someone to exchange romantic gifts with and to snuggle with in the cold nights; to kiss under the mistletoe.

And the best part was that I’d have someone to spend New Year’s Eve with – it wouldn’t just be another year with me babysitting my nephews so my sister and her husband could celebrate their togetherness (as much as I loved being Auntie Jane, seriously - they could find another babysitter for one night!)

I mean, what do you really like to do. Not what you like to do because you think a guy will like you if you like to do it.

What would you choose to do with your time if there were no men in the world?

Sometimes it helps to think about what you don’t think you can do or have been told you can’t do.

I’ve got some breaking news for you; you don’t need a guy to live your life.

You don’t need a guy to have a world to fit into. You don’t need a guy to feel like you can start living. It’s what you choose to make of it.

You can keep waiting, hoping for the right guy to hurry up and come along and rescue you from your current life because you think it’s easier to find yourself in someone else’s ready-made life than make one of your own.

But the price you pay for that is your self-esteem, your worth, your confidence, your you.

Did someone forget to tell you that you can be anything you want to be? You can! You can do anything, be anything, achieve anything, if you believe in yourself that you can.

What would your life be like if you truly believed everything was going to work out perfectly?

I know what you’re thinking: It sounds like a cliché. 

Just believe! It’ll happen. Just believe it and it’ll come true.

And while there are a lot of people out there who claim the power of believing in something, that it really works, I’m going to go a step further here and talk about the power of believing that I’m referring to.

The kind for us not so sure types that get so hung up on how to do it right that we end up not getting the point of it.

The Things We Do For Love

This is how I wound up on a roof...

Why we do them, no one knows. But if we think it’s love, we’ll try it.

Because they’re into skiing and we want to do things with them and we just know it’ll be easy to pick it up.

No, no, no! Do not do this.

I learned this one the hard way. And ended up on the roof. Of a shed. On the slopes.

It was supposed to be skiing on the trails, and not scary. But, in my enthusiasm for my new beau, I neglected to mention that I had never skied before, and in fact, found the whole thing a little scary.

But I, the ever idealistic pleaser, was sure it would work itself out.

Right.

So there we were. Of course I looked the part in my expensive sexy snow bunny suit, so I figured that would make it all work out. I’d look so good it wouldn’t matter that I didn’t really ski (at least not well).Continue Reading
