What do I do to make him want what I want?

There’s a very common scenario that seems to happen to all of us at one time or another, and sometimes over and over again.

We end up in a relationship with a guy that has tons of potential, IF he would just commit!

And the dilemma is always - how long to wait it out to see if he truly IS going to come around?  Or are we just wasting our time? Or, what if you've finally had enough, and decide to move on right before he was about to come around?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions because we are such a hopeful group.  The bottom line is that what we’re really asking is how do we know if he’ll ever commit?

We’ve all been there – he’s the perfect guy, except…

Some of these complaints are relatively minor; he throws his sweaty workout underwear on top of your bath towel, or he leaves the razor stubble all over the bathroom sink without rinsing it down.

And some are much more serious, such as infidelity, physical abuse, or substance abuse.

As far as the second category goes, as long as marriage and children are not yet involved, it’s best to walk away and stay away. If a man cheats, it does not usually get better with time; in fact it typically gets worse. If he’s done it once, and you stay with him, he knows he can get away with it and it will most likely happen again when the opportunity presents itself.Continue Reading

Here’s one of my favorite poems that I've found inspiration in many times over the years.

This one I had on a print hanging on my wall when I was in my twenties; it’s now very tattered and worn from taking it down off the wall and hanging it back up each time I moved.

Unfortunately, it’s now too worn, torn and creased to display on the wall, but I keep the print folded in my inspiration box to enjoy on those rare occasions when I have a chance to take the box down from the closet, sit and look through it.Continue Reading

I know. It’s that holiday again.

The one where it seems like all of the women in the office are getting a big, gorgeous bouquet of flowers except you. Where you feel like there may as well be a big sign over your desk with an arrow pointing down saying “I don’t have anybody to send me flowers!” 

If that sounds more than a little cynical, it’s because I have a very good memory of all the Valentine’s Days I celebrated as a single girl, and I can still recall the dread I felt each year as the day rolled around.

Sure, there were a few years when I actually encountered both the holiday and a boyfriend at the same time – but this was a feat not often repeated. Most of the time it was just me watching from my cubicle as the parade of flower deliveries began finding their way all across the offices of the particular company where I was working at the time.

Always the same assortments of a dozen red roses; maybe with a different vase or a little more or less baby’s breath, but all saying the same thing: “I have someone; I’m not alone”. Continue Reading

Am I even in a healthy relationship?

I've often heard the question - how do you know if the relationship you’re in is a healthy one? 

It’s a timeless question, one that I’m sure has been asked by women just like us many times over the past millennia.

At some point in our lives, we find ourselves questioning whether or not it’s worth hanging around a little longer to see if things are going to pan out the way we’d like them to. Or whether it’s time to let it go, because it’s just not going anywhere – at least not anywhere in the direction you want it to go in.

And while sometimes it’s pretty clear when you take a step back and look at it objectively, more often it’s a heavily gray area that requires some real soul searching to figure out what’s going on. Continue Reading

Is it all in your head or is he getting distant?

Why do we sometimes hold on so tightly to something that isn’t working for us?

To someone that isn’t treating us the way we deserve to be treated? Who isn’t loving us the way we were meant to be loved?

You know the scenario – it starts off with fireworks, an amazing connection; you just can’t get enough of each other. Then suddenly, he’s not calling as much, he’s out with his buddies more than he’s out with you, or you just have some gut feeling that something has changed for him.

He seems distant.

Any time a relationship I was in started taking this kind of turn for the worse I did what so many of us do. I started hanging on tighter.
