There's always the risk of getting hurt.

Some email correspondence I had with a reader last week got me to thinking about how life is really all about taking risks. And how anything worth having usually requires risking something of ourselves.

Like love.

Especially when we’re talking about love in the truest sense of the word.

Because when we put ourselves out there and share part of ourselves with another person, whether it’s in the emotional or physical sense, there’s always the risk that our feelings will not be reciprocated; that someone else may take advantage of our good will, our purest intentions, our selfless love.

I’ve learned many things since my single days.  Some are things that I regret doing and wish that I had done differently, and some are things that I regret not doing in the first place. 

It’s this second group that leaves your body aching with the painful regret of missed opportunities, of what could have been.

If I could go back and do one thing differently, it would be that I would have chosen consciously to always do what I love doing.  You see, when you love what you are doing, you are loving life.Continue Reading

Here’s one of my favorite poems that I've found inspiration in many times over the years.

This one I had on a print hanging on my wall when I was in my twenties; it’s now very tattered and worn from taking it down off the wall and hanging it back up each time I moved.

Unfortunately, it’s now too worn, torn and creased to display on the wall, but I keep the print folded in my inspiration box to enjoy on those rare occasions when I have a chance to take the box down from the closet, sit and look through it.Continue Reading

I know. It’s that holiday again.

The one where it seems like all of the women in the office are getting a big, gorgeous bouquet of flowers except you. Where you feel like there may as well be a big sign over your desk with an arrow pointing down saying “I don’t have anybody to send me flowers!” 

If that sounds more than a little cynical, it’s because I have a very good memory of all the Valentine’s Days I celebrated as a single girl, and I can still recall the dread I felt each year as the day rolled around.

Sure, there were a few years when I actually encountered both the holiday and a boyfriend at the same time – but this was a feat not often repeated. Most of the time it was just me watching from my cubicle as the parade of flower deliveries began finding their way all across the offices of the particular company where I was working at the time.

Always the same assortments of a dozen red roses; maybe with a different vase or a little more or less baby’s breath, but all saying the same thing: “I have someone; I’m not alone”. Continue Reading

Am I even in a healthy relationship?

I've often heard the question - how do you know if the relationship you’re in is a healthy one? 

It’s a timeless question, one that I’m sure has been asked by women just like us many times over the past millennia.

At some point in our lives, we find ourselves questioning whether or not it’s worth hanging around a little longer to see if things are going to pan out the way we’d like them to. Or whether it’s time to let it go, because it’s just not going anywhere – at least not anywhere in the direction you want it to go in.

And while sometimes it’s pretty clear when you take a step back and look at it objectively, more often it’s a heavily gray area that requires some real soul searching to figure out what’s going on. Continue Reading

Anytime you’re trying to explain why it really is love, just stop.

I often hear women asking whether or not their relationship is the real thing.

Wondering if the guy they’re with is the right one for them. Wondering what they should do. And in most cases, as soon as they start describing their situation, it becomes pretty clear that there’s a lot more going on in their situation than love.
