I remember how excited I would be if I met someone who showed some real relationship potential in the months or even weeks leading up to the holiday season.

Finally! This Christmas I might actually be a part of a relationship - a couple!

I might actually have someone to show up with me for the office holiday party and family Christmas gathering! Someone to exchange romantic gifts with and to snuggle with in the cold nights; to kiss under the mistletoe.

And the best part was that I’d have someone to spend New Year’s Eve with – it wouldn’t just be another year with me babysitting my nephews so my sister and her husband could celebrate their togetherness (as much as I loved being Auntie Jane, seriously - they could find another babysitter for one night!)

One Big Happy Family – But Where’s My Boyfriend?

I remember it well. It was a Saturday night, and I was off to the mall - again - with my guy’s mom.

Yep, you read that right.

Not with him; not with my girlfriends. With his mom.

See here’s the thing; if I couldn’t be with him on Saturday nights, (you see, that was the well-rested, high-energy day he saved for going out with his buddies while I got the end-of the-week exhausted Friday nights), then the next best thing to me was to be with his family.

Any of them. Even his brother-in-law.

There we were on the couch. All four of us. His mom, his dad, his brother-in-law and me. Watching television after we’d gotten back from shopping (his mom and me - remember?)

Sometimes, if we look at the reasons we stay in a relationship that isn't working, we find that it’s all about the A word.

Alone.

If we’re really honest with ourselves, I think we’d find that much of the stuff we allow in our relationships is because we’re afraid of being alone. As in, without a guy.

I think a lot of us feel that way even if we don’t want to admit it.

We don’t want to be alone. Whether it’s our culture that tells us we need to be with someone, be part of a couple to be OK, or whether it’s our own internalized belief system, we can go to great lengths to make sure we’re with someone, even if he’s not the one for us.

Because at least he’s someone.

I was telling a friend about this blog today, and explaining why I’m so passionate about wanting to help spare my single girlfriends out there from so much of the heartbreak I went through, when I realized something. About all that heartbreak.

It’s a gift.

Any time we experience a broken heart over someone who didn’t turn out to love us the way we loved them; any time we’re forced to face the reality of unrequited love; any time we’re left watching someone walk away from us, realizing we’re on our own again. It’s a gift to be grateful for.

I know what you’re thinking: It sounds like a cliché.

Just believe! It’ll happen. Just believe it and it’ll come true.

And while there are a lot of people out there who claim the power of believing in something, that it really works, I’m going to go a step further here and talk about the power of believing that I’m referring to.
